Quill Falcon Partners with Reigart Contracts Ltd for Historic Paint Removal at Pollok Country Park Stables

In 2024, Quill Falcon proudly collaborated with Reigart Contracts Ltd on a distinctive conservation project at the Category A-listed stables in Pollok Country Park, Glasgow.

These stables trace their origins back to the mid-1600s, when a castle first stood on the site. Elements of that original structure remain embedded in the current building, making it a site of considerable architectural and cultural importance.

The conservation challenge

Over time, the internal sandstone walls had been coated with multiple layers of paint, ranging from traditional limewash to modern eggshell finishes. These aged and varied coatings proved resistant to conventional removal methods, such as gel-based strippers, which risked damaging the delicate sandstone beneath.

To address this, Reigart enlisted Quill Falcon to identify a safer, more precise solution.

A gentle, yet effective technique

Quill Falcon conducted a series of test patches using the Cyclone 60 Trailer, which combines fine glass media with water at a reduced pressure. This method allowed for the careful removal of paint layers while preserving the integrity of the underlying stone. All tests were carried out under the supervision of conservation architects and were approved by the client.

Restoration in action

Following successful trials, Reigart prepared the site for full-scale restoration using the Quill Falcon system. The process revealed that the original sandstone was in excellent condition, hidden beneath decades of paint.

The restored area included parts of the original stable block, now repurposed as offices for Glasgow City Council Land Services. A large hall within the block, used for community and educational events, further highlights the building’s ongoing social relevance.

A site rich in history

The stable block reflects the heritage of several historic castles in the region. Notably, the east range incorporates a flank wall from Laigh Castle. Within the courtyard, marriage lintels commemorate the union of the Maxwell and Stewart families, offering insight into the area’s social history.

The stables also hold a legacy as one of the earliest centres of excellence for Clydesdale horses – a tradition still visible on the grounds today.

Quill Falcon’s careful process allowed these details to be revealed and protected, supporting the building’s role as both a heritage landmark and a functional community space.

Looking forward

While much of the restoration is complete, the final phase of refurbishment is still to come. Once finished, this meticulous work will ensure the Pollok stables remain a cherished landmark for generations, making it a testament to sustainable restoration and the preservation of Glasgow’s rich architectural heritage.
