No bridge too far
The impressive Erskine Bridge stands proud over the River Clyde, connecting West Dunbartonshire with Renfrewshire. Spanning 1.32 kilometres, the multi-span cable-stayed box girder bridge was opened by Princess Anne in the summer of 1971.
A bespoke blasting solution
Our client, Spencer Group, working on behalf of Transport for Scotland, needed a custom–built mobile dustless blasting unit that could access the pedestrian footpath to enable the surface preparation of the bridge’s cantilever web underneath the bridge when using the gantry system.
The plan
The Quill Falcon team of engineers set to work designing a bespoke trailer with a narrow base. They reconfigured the layout of our conventional trailer unit to accommodate a larger 175 cfm compressor, reducing the trailer blast unit’s width from 2,000 mm to 1,780 mm.
Once the custom trailer was complete, Spencer Group purchased two custom-built Quill Falcon Cyclone 60 Trailer units to overcome the width restriction on the pedestrian footpath.
The result
The narrower trailer meant that Spencer Group were able to use their Ford Ranger to tow the trailer and easily access the full pedestrian walkway without lane closures or traffic disruptions.
Furthermore, Spencer Group successfully carried out the cantilever preparation work without the need for full encapsulation on the gantry, saving both time and money for the client.
